3 Day Memorable Rhode Island Road Trip: Great Mansions, Seaside Views & Hidden History
Looking for a short but memorable getaway on the U.S. East Coast? This 3-day Rhode Island trip combines Gilded Age mansions, stunning coastal walks, unexpected history, and even a quirky candy museum.
Whether you’re coming from New York City, Boston, or further away, Rhode Island is an easy and rewarding destination. This itinerary blends practical travel tips with my own experiences, so you can follow it exactly or use it as inspiration.
Rhode Island Trip Overview

- Trip length: 3 days / 2 nights
- Best airport to fly into: Providence T.F. Green Airport (PVD) – closest and most convenient for Rhode Island.
- Other options: Boston Logan (BOS) or Hartford Bradley (BDL)
- Why we started from Newark: We found cheaper flights there and decided to make it work. However, we don’t actually recommend Newark or New York City as a starting point unless you’re already nearby. Driving out of the NYC area was congested and stressful—we missed turns a couple of times!
Tip: For a smoother trip, fly into Providence or Boston if possible. You’ll save time and avoid crowded roads.

Day 1 – Arrival and Newport’s Gilded Age
Our road trip began at Newark Airport because we found the cheapest flights there. After picking up our rental car, we started the long drive to Newport, Rhode Island.
Honest note: Driving out of the New York/New Jersey area wasn’t easy—the roads were busy, complicated, and we made a few wrong turns. If you want a stress-free trip, I recommend flying into Providence or Boston instead. You’ll be much closer to Newport and can start enjoying the scenery right away.
Once we arrived in Newport, everything felt worth it—the mansions, ocean air, and relaxing pace made us quickly forget the hectic start.
The Breakers

The Breakers – the most famous of Newport’s “summer cottages.” Inside, the grand halls and intricate details are unforgettable. Need to buy a ticket to go inside.
Cliff Walk

Don’t miss Cliff Walk! – a 3.5-mile path combining ocean views with mansion backdrops. Even a short section is worth it. We could see many gorgeous mansions and beautiful sea … just amazing!
The route includes the rocky area. Better to wear walking shoes.
Where to Eat
- The Black Pearl – famous for clam chowder
- Midtown Oyster Bar – fresh local seafood
Where to stay
- Budget: Newport Harbor Hotel & Marina
- Mid-range: Gilded Hotel (stylish boutique)
- Luxury: The Chanler at Cliff Walk
Day 2 – Mansions, Seaside Walks & a Japanese Connection
Touro Park

Touro Park – home to the “Shimoda Tomodachi Declaration(下田トモダチ宣言)” monument, celebrating friendship between the USA and Japan. As a Japanese traveler, this was a heartwarming surprise.
Thames Street

Stroll along Thames Street for shops, cafés, and harbor views.
Marble House

We just dropped by the Marble House. Needless to say, this is a huge, beautiful mansion.
In between history lessons and seaside views, Newport’s small-town charm made me want to slow down and stay longer.
Food to Try in Rhode Island
- Del’s Lemonade (famous frozen lemonade)
- Coffee milk (Rhode Island’s official state drink). Coffee milk is made using coffee syrup (not regular brewed coffee) mixed with regular milk. The coffee syrup is a sweet, concentrated coffee flavoring – think of it like chocolate syrup but with a rich coffee flavor instead.
- Clam Cakes
Day 3 – Parks, Ivy League Charm & a Quirky Museum
Drive: Newport → Hartford (~2 hrs) → New Haven (~1 hr) → Newark (~2 hrs)
Bushnell Park, Hartford

Bushnell Park, Hartford – green space with a carousel, nice for a short stop.
Yale University, New Haven

We explored Yale University, walking through its beautiful campus. Yes, you can do a self-guided tour.
The Gothic-style architecture feels like walking through history.
I bought a cute bulldog doll of Handsome Dan, Yale’s mascot, for their sports team at the visitor center.

PEZ Visitor Center, Orange, CT

Our last fun stop was the PEZ Visitor Center in Orange, Connecticut. Ending the trip at PEZ was pure fun—sometimes, road trips are best when you mix elegance with the unexpected.
PEZ Visitor Center, Orange, CT – a quirky, family-friendly stop full of candy nostalgia. If you enjoy hands-on attractions like this, you’ll love my blog post Fun Factory Tours in the Northern USA: Tasty Adventure! — from chocolate to cheese to iconic candies.
We then headed back to Newark Airport to return the car and catch our flight home.
Why This Rhode Island Road Trip Will Surprise You
For many international travelers, Rhode Island isn’t a main U.S. destination. I thought we’d only see a few mansions, but the landscapes, ocean views, and unexpected cultural connections made it a trip full of surprises.
