Visiting the Only Mister Donut in the USA

When I first heard there was only one Mister Donut shop left in the United States, I was truly surprised. In Japan, Mister Donut is everywhere — a beloved brand known for its delicious donuts, seasonal treats, and cozy cafes. So when we found out that a single shop remained in Godfrey, Illinois, we knew we had to visit.

A Little History of Mister Donut-From America to Japan

Mister Donut originally started in the United States in the 1950s. However, the brand became much more successful in Japan after it was introduced there in the 1970s. While the original U.S. locations slowly disappeared, a Japanese company formed the business partnership with  Mister Donut and turned it into one of the country’s most popular donut chains.

Today, there are hundreds of Mister Donut locations across Japan — offering not only donuts, but also seasonal treats like mochi-style donuts, savory items, and even noodles in some stores. It’s a place where many people, including myself, have sweet childhood memories.

That’s why I was so excited to discover that one original Mister Donut still exists in the USA — and I had to go see it for myself!

Our visit to Mister Donut in Godfrey, Illinois

The shop in Godfrey looks simple and old-fashioned on the outside, but inside, it felt both nostalgic and warm — like finding a hidden treasure from the past.

We ordered eight donuts — even though there were only two of us! We wanted to try as many flavors as possible. We also purchased a cute plastic bottle with the Mister Donut logo, which included five cups of free coffee. Of course, we couldn’t drink five, but we thought it was such a kind and generous service, especially for local regulars.

The atmosphere was quiet, relaxed, and very friendly. Most of the customers were older than us (though we’re not so young anymore!), maybe in their 70s. Everyone seemed to know each other, chatting casually while enjoying their coffee and sweets. It felt like a true community spot.

On our way out, we had a heartwarming chat with a kind man whose son had graduated from a university in Japan. That unexpected connection made this visit even more special for me.

Visiting Mister Donut in Godfrey wasn’t just about eating donuts — it was about experiencing a piece of cultural history. This little shop is the last of its kind in the U.S., but it still lives on in the hearts of its customers — and in Japan, where the brand is thriving.

If you’re ever near Godfrey, Illinois, and you’re a fan of Japanese culture or just love donuts, I highly recommend stopping by. It’s a  little adventure worth the trip!
