Free Things to Do Near Orlando, Tampa & St. Pete (besides theme parks)

When people think of Orlando, the first things that come to mind are usually theme parks like Disney and Universal. But there are so many other free things to do near Orlando that are just as fun—and often much more relaxing! In this blog post, I want to share some of my favorite free or low-cost destinations around Orlando, Tampa, and St. Petersburg.

Whether you’re visiting for the first time or you’re a repeat traveler looking to explore beyond the parks, these spots are perfect add-ons to your trip. Most are very close to the theme parks, easy to reach, and offer a completely different side of Central Florida—from peaceful nature walks to charming historic neighborhoods.

I discovered many of these places while traveling for work, and they made me realize how much more this region has to offer beyond roller coasters and long lines!

If you want a Disney vibe without buying a theme park ticket, Disney Springs is the perfect place. It’s a large outdoor shopping and dining area that feels like a mini-Disneyland—complete with themed buildings, live music, and lots of places to explore.

I visited Disney Springs after finishing a business trip in the area because our team had a dinner planned there. Before dinner, I had some free time, so I walked around and explored the Disney shops. Even though I stayed for less than an hour, I was able to enjoy so much—beautiful lake views, shops filled with Disney souvenirs, and the fun, magical atmosphere.
