As a person who’s visited over 40 factory tours, brand museums, and visitor centers across America, I can tell you there’s something magical about discovering the stories behind everyday products. Whether it’s tasting the most amazing baked potato of your life at a tiny Idaho museum or watching bourbon being made in Kentucky’s rolling hills, these weekend adventures have given me countless memories and great stories to share.

The best part? You can do all of this without touching your vacation days. Personally, I don’t want to touch my vacation days except I go to my long vacation. So I’ve perfected these regional weekend itineraries specifically for the “Friday after work to Sunday evening” schedule that works for busy professionals. Best Seasons: April-October (trust me, avoid the Pacific Northwest winters!)

Option 1: Seattle Aviation & Tech Triangle (2 Days)

  • Recommended overnight: Hotel near Mukilteo/Everett (closer to Boeing)
  • Grab dinner at a local spot and rest up – you’ll need energy for tomorrow!
Saturday (The Big Day)
  • Morning: Boeing Future of Flight Tour (Mukilteo, WA) 
    • Must book advance reservations!
    • 2-3 hours including gift shop time
    • Pro tip: The gift shop is incredible – budget extra time and money
  • Noon: Lunch break
  • 2:00 PM: Drive to Redmond (45 minutes)
  • 3:00 PM: Microsoft Visitor Center (Redmond, WA) Personal experience: “Very cool place. We can learn the history of Microsoft and buy souvenirs in the shop.”
    • 1-2 hours self-guided experience
    • Great for tech history buffs
  • 5:00 PM: Check into Seattle hotel
  • Evening: Explore Seattle’s food scene
Sunday
  • 9:00 AM: First Starbucks Store (Seattle, WA) 
    • Go early! Many people might already make a line…
    • 30-45 minutes for photos and coffee
  • 10:00 AM: Explore Pike Place Market. You may find cute souvenirs.
  • 12:00 PM: Head to airport for departure

Option 2: Silicon Valley Innovation Circuit (2 Days)

Saturday
  • Morning: Apple Park Visitor Center (Cupertino, CA) I thought we could see the round building of Apple but we can’t see it from there. We enjoyed looking around the Apple store though.
  • Afternoon: Google Visitor Experience (Mountain View, CA) Very beautiful building and they have a cafe next to the museum.
  • If time permits: Intel Museum (Santa Clara, CA) Very informative museum but due to my lack of knowledge of technology, the content was too difficult for me. If you are a fan of technology, I recommend visiting this place.
Sunday
  • Morning: Ghirardelli Square (San Francisco, CA) This is not a factory tour, just a shop. We can buy a wide variety of Ghirardelli chocolates.
  • Quick visit: Levi Strauss & Co. Headquarters (San Francisco, CA) Just visited and saw the building from outside. Just curious, but this HQ is in Levis Plaza like a park and we enjoyed atmosphere and looking around. 
  • Afternoon: Return to SFO for departure

2. Midwest Manufacturing Heritage Weekend

Option 1: Milwaukee & Moline - Industrial Giants & Iconic Rides (2 Days)

Best Airport: Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport (MKE) or Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) (for access to Moline).
Best Seasons: May-September (avoid those harsh winters!)

Perfect for: The person who is interested in manufacturing, heavy machinery, and iconic American brands, who prefer a mix of indoor and outdoor experiences. Option-1 is long drive needed plan. Make sure if you don’t mind this long drive. 

Friday Evening
  • Fly into: Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport (MKE)
  • Recommended overnight: Hotel in Milwaukee area.
  • Enjoy dinner at a local Milwaukee restaurant, perhaps exploring the historic Third Ward or downtown area.
Saturday: Milwaukee's Icons
  • Morning : Harley-Davidson Museum: Immerse yourselves in motorcycle history. Even if you don’t ride, the exhibits are engaging, and you can sit on bikes for a photo op.
     
  • Lunch : Grab lunch near the museum.
  • Afternoon : Miller Brewery Tour: Take a tour to learn about the brewing process. 
     
  • Late Afternoon: Drive to Moline, IL (approximately 3 hours).
  • Evening: Check into your hotel in Moline/Quad Cities area. Enjoy dinner.
Sunday: Heavy Machinery & Departure
  • Morning : John Deere Pavilion: Witness immense heavy machinery up close. It’s surprisingly engaging and often a hit with visitors of all ages.
     
  • Lunch : Have lunch in Moline.
  • Afternoon: Drive back to Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport (MKE) or Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) for your departure

Option 2: Minnesota's Quirky & Culinary Delights (2 Days)

Best Airport: Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport (MSP)
Best Seasons: May-September (avoid those harsh winters!)

Perfect for:The travelers who is looking for unique, perhaps slightly quirky, cultural experiences and food history, with less emphasis on strenuous activity.

  • Fly into: Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport (MSP).
  • Recommended overnight: Settle into your accommodation in Minneapolis or St. Paul.
  • Dinner & Evening: Enjoy a relaxed dinner in the Twin Cities.
Saturday: Southern Minnesota's Unique Stops
  • Morning : Drive to Austin, MN: Begin your drive south to Austin (approximately 1.5 – 2 hours from MSP).
  • Morning : SPAM Museum: Discover the history of this famous food. The interior is cute, and you can learn about SPAM’s global impact, including its connection to Japanese food culture.
     
  • Lunch : Have lunch in Austin.
  • Afternoon : Drive to Red Wing, MN: Head east to Red Wing (approximately 1 hour).
  • Afternoon : Red Wing Shoe Company Museum: See the world’s largest boot and explore the history of quality footwear. You can also purchase high-quality boots here.
     
  • Evening: Drive back to the Minneapolis/St. Paul area (approximately 1 hour). Enjoy dinner and relax.
Sunday: Giant & Departure
  • Morning : Drive to Blue Earth, MN: Drive south to Blue Earth (approximately 1.5 – 2 hours from MSP).
  • Morning : Jolly Green Giant Museum: Just visit and see the huge green giant statue. The area around might be sparse, but it’s a unique photo opportunity.
     
  • Lunch 1:00 PM: Grab a quick lunch in Blue Earth or on your way back.
  • Afternoon: Drive back to Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport (MSP) for your departure.
